During my recent family vacation to JAX Beach Florida with the Whipp family (post to come soon), I read the book by Kathryn Stockett, The Help. It was Lyndsey’s idea to have all the girls read the book and then the last day of the trip, we could have a small book club meeeting to discuss. So Friday night, the day before we left to come home, four of us girls went to the local yogurt shop (Yobe) to get some soft serve yogurt and discuss the book.
I gave the book a 3.5 out of 5 rating for overall best book I’ve read. I mean, I did like the book but it was no Gone with the Wind or Cry, the Beloved Country (2 of my favorite all time books). The thing I found the most interesting while I was reading this book is the overlook of conditions in the south during the 1960’s. Maybe this is common knowledge but my previous education overlooked it. I found it eye-opening and very motivational at times. The Synopsis sums up the book well by it’s first line: “Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step.” And that’s just it, this was the whole theme that I pondered while reading the book. We are all ordinary women but how often do we have the courage to take one extraordinary step?
The movie to this book will be released in August 2011. I look forward to seeing the movie but I don’t really care for movies where I have read the book. The only exception to that is Harry Potter, of course. Maybe seeing this movie with Sherry, Lyndsey and Sarah will be our book club meeting #2. I look forward to the release and encourage others to read the book. I’ll leave you with the trailer below.
Other books I read that week in Jacksonville include The Alchemist and Little Bee. All of which I would recommend.
